Q1: What makes Nilgiris tea different from regular CTC tea?
Nilgiris CTC tea is grown at 6,000 feet altitude where the cool climate (15–20°C year-round), mineral-rich soil, and two annual monsoons produce leaves with a naturally bright, brisk flavour and high antioxidant content. Most commercial CTC blends include lowland Assam or Dooars tea. OotyMade's Nilgiris Regular Tea is 100% Nilgiris origin — no blending to reduce cost.
Q2: How strong is Nilgiris Regular Tea?
This is a full-bodied CTC blend that brews a deep amber to reddish-brown cup. It is strong enough to hold up to milk and sugar — in fact it is designed for traditional Indian milk chai. For black tea without milk, reduce to half a teaspoon per cup to avoid over-extraction.
Q3: How many cups does one pack make?
One teaspoon (3–4g) per cup. A 250g pack makes approximately 60–80 cups. A 500g pack makes approximately 125–160 cups. A 1kg pack makes approximately 250–320 cups depending on your preferred strength.
Q4: Is this tea suitable for making masala chai?
Yes — it is an excellent base for masala chai. The bold, full-bodied character of Nilgiris CTC holds up well to strong spices like cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper. Add spices directly to the water before adding tea for best flavour infusion.
Q5: Where can I buy authentic Nilgiris tea online in India?
OotyMade sources and delivers authentic Nilgiris tea directly from estates in the Blue Mountains, pan-India. Order at ootymade.com. Available in 250g, 500g, and 1kg packs.
Speciality
The Nilgiris — India's Blue Mountains — grows tea at 6,000 feet above sea level, where cool year-round temperatures (15–20°C), two annual monsoons, and mineral-rich volcanic soil create growing conditions found nowhere else in India.
At this altitude, tea plants grow more slowly. Slower growth concentrates the natural compounds — polyphenols, catechins, aromatic oils — that give Nilgiris tea its characteristic brightness, natural sweetness, and clean, clear liquor.
What makes OotyMade's tea range unique is traceability. We source from named estates — Kannavarai, Homewood, Darmona, Homedale, Silver Oak — so you know exactly which garden your tea comes from. No anonymous blends. No imported material. Just the Blue Mountains.
All teas are packed fresh at source and dispatched within 48 hours of your order.
How to Prepare Tea
For Milk Chai (Traditional Indian Method)
- Add 200ml water to a saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Add 1 heaped teaspoon (3–4g) of tea powder.
- Simmer for 2–3 minutes on medium heat.
- Add 50–75ml full-fat milk.
- Simmer for 1 more minute.
- Add sugar to taste, strain, and serve immediately.
For Black Tea (Plain, Without Milk)
- Heat water to 90–95°C (just below boiling).
- Add 1 teaspoon tea powder per 200ml.
- Steep for 2–3 minutes maximum.
- Strain immediately into your cup.
- Add lemon or honey if desired — never milk with black tea.
For Iced Tea
- Brew double-strength (2 teaspoons per 200ml).
- Steep for 3 minutes.
- Strain directly over a glass full of ice.
- Add lemon slices and honey.
Nilgiris tea stays crystal clear when iced — no cloudiness.
Best Paired With
Full-fat milk for traditional chai. Or drink plain as black tea with a squeeze of lemon.
Storage
Shelf life: 12–18 months from packing date. Store in airtight container away from light and moisture.
All tea is packed fresh at source and vacuum-sealed or airtight-sealed before dispatch.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight (degrades chlorophyll and antioxidants), moisture (causes mould and off-flavours), strong odours (tea absorbs surrounding aromas rapidly), and heat above 30°C.
Best practice
Transfer to a ceramic or glass airtight container on receipt — a dedicated tea tin stored in a kitchen cabinet is ideal.
Signs of freshness
Fresh Nilgiris tea has a bright, clean aroma on opening. If the aroma has faded significantly, the tea is past its prime — though still safe to consume.
