Lovedale is one of the Nilgiris’ most picturesque tea-growing areas — you pass through it on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Ooty and Coonoor, the tea estate rows visible from the train window. Havuku’s Lovedale organic whole leaf black tea captures this estate’s character in a premium orthodox format: whole leaf, not CTC, retaining the full structural complexity of the Nilgiris leaf.
Orthodox whole leaf tea brews differently from CTC — slower infusion, more complex flavour evolution as the cup cools, a depth that CTC’s efficiency doesn’t replicate. This is the tea for those who appreciate what the leaf itself tastes like.
- 🌿 100% Organic — No Chemical Inputs — Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers in the Nilgiris biosphere.
- 🍃 Whole Leaf Orthodox — Not CTC — Full leaf structure preserved. The cup develops complexity as it steeps and evolves as it cools — a drinking experience that CTC cannot deliver.
- 🏔️ Lovedale Estate Character — The specific microclimate of Lovedale’s altitude and location on the Nilgiris ridge produces a tea with distinctive depth and natural sweetness.
- ✨ Premium Format for Tea Enthusiasts — For those who want to taste what Nilgiris altitude does to the tea leaf without the uniformity of the CTC process.
- 📦 Fresh Packed, 48-Hour Dispatch — Sealed at source in the Nilgiris and dispatched within 48 hours.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between whole leaf orthodox tea and CTC?
CTC (Cut, Tear, Curl) breaks the leaf into small uniform pieces for fast, strong brewing — ideal for daily chai with milk. Orthodox whole leaf tea retains the full leaf structure, brewing more slowly with a more complex, nuanced flavour profile. Orthodox is typically drunk plain or with minimal milk to appreciate its full character.
How do I brew Havuku Lovedale Whole Leaf?
Use water just off the boil (95°C). Add 1.5–2 teaspoons per 200ml. Steep for 3–4 minutes. Strain and serve plain or with a little milk. Do not over-steep — whole leaf teas can become bitter beyond 4–5 minutes.
Why Nilgiris Tea is Different
Why Nilgiris Tea is Different
The Nilgiris — India's Blue
Mountains — grows tea at 6,000 feet above sea level, where the combination of
cool temperatures (15–20°C year-round), two annual monsoons, and mineral-rich
volcanic soil creates growing conditions found nowhere else in India.
At this altitude, tea plants
grow more slowly. Slower growth concentrates the natural compounds —
polyphenols, catechins, aromatic oils — that give Nilgiris tea its
characteristic brightness, natural sweetness, and clean, clear liquor.
What makes OotyMade's tea range
unique is traceability. We source from named estates — Kannavarai, Homewood,
Darmona, Homedale, Silver Oak — so you know exactly which garden your tea comes
from. No anonymous blends. No imported material. Just the Blue Mountains.
All teas are packed fresh at source and dispatched within 48 hours of
your order.

SHELF LIFE: 12–18 months from
packing date when stored correctly.
All tea is packed fresh at

STORAGE: Store in an airtight
container in a cool, dry place away from:
— Direct sunlight (degrades
chlorophyll and antioxidants)
— Moisture (causes mold and
off-flavors)

surrounding aromas rapidly)
— Heat above 30 degrees Celsius
BEST PRACTICE: Transfer to a
ceramic or glass airtight container on receipt.
A dedicated tea tin stored in a
kitchen cabinet is ideal.
SIGNS OF FRESHNESS: Fresh Nilgiris
tea has a bright, clean aroma on opening.
