DAY 2 — Coonoor: Toy Train, Tea Estates & Viewpoints
Zone: Coonoor (19 km from Ooty) — a completely different hill station character Route logic: Toy train to Coonoor in morning, cab-based Coonoor sightseeing afternoon, return by road

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage experience — a rack-and-pinion steam railway dating to 1899, climbing through 16 tunnels and across 31 bridges. The First Class compartment has window seats on both sides and holds only 4 passengers — the intimacy and the views are extraordinary. The journey is 19 km and takes 1 hour 45 minutes because of the steep gradient that requires the rack-and-pinion system.
Key moments on the journey: the first view of the valley as you leave Ooty, the Lovedale station with Wellington Defence Staff College visible, the Ketti Valley vista opening suddenly — one of the most dramatic valley views in South India — and the mist-and-forest section between Ketti and Coonoor.
Your driver: Have your cab driver meet you at Coonoor railway station (not Ooty) for the rest of the day.

🌺 11:00 AM — Sim's Park, Coonoor

🍵 12:00 PM — Highfield or Glendale Tea Estate
A working tea estate visit with guided walk through the plucking rows, factory tour, and estate-fresh tasting. Coonoor's tea estates are among the Nilgiris' finest — the Glendale estate in particular is well-organised for visitors and produces an acclaimed orthodox tea. The estate restaurant serves lunch with views of the tea garden below.
Budget option: The Gene Pool Eco Park (now an organic nursery of the Forest Department) is a free nature trail near Coonoor — 8 km, 4 hours, scenic and educational.
🦅 2:00 PM — Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock

Practical note: The road to Dolphin's Nose is narrow. Your cab driver will be familiar with the route — leave navigation to them.
