Ooty 3-Day Itinerary 2026 — The Complete Day-by-Day Trip Planner
By OotyMade — Nilgiris residents since 1970 · Updated March 2026
Three days in the Nilgiris is the right amount of time. Long enough to see the key attractions without rushing, short enough to avoid the aimlessness that longer holidays sometimes produce in a compact hill station.
This itinerary covers three distinct zones of the Nilgiris — Ooty town and its immediate surroundings on Day 1, Coonoor and the Ketti Valley on Day 2, and the western wild country (Pykara and Mudumalai) on Day 3. Each day has its own geographical logic — no backtracking, no wasted driving time.
Before anything: apply your Ooty E-Pass (free at epass.tnega.org) and book the toy train tickets on IRCTC (UAM to ONR, First Class, 60–90 days in advance for April–June) before your trip.
PRE-ARRIVAL — The Night Before
✅ Apply E-Pass at epass.tnega.org (if not already done) ✅ Confirm toy train booking for Day 2 (IRCTC — station codes UAM to ONR) ✅ Ask hotel to arrange a local cab driver for 3 days (₹2,000–₹2,500/day) ✅ Download offline maps — mobile signal can be weak in some forest areas
DAY 1 — Ooty Town: Heritage, Gardens & Peak
Zone: Central Ooty — all stops within 10 km of Charring Cross Route logic: Start at the garden (closest), work outward to Doddabetta, return to town for afternoon
🌿 7:30 AM — Government Botanical Garden
⏰ 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM | 💰 ₹50 Adults, ₹30 Children | ⏱ 1.5–2 hours
The most important timing advice for this entire itinerary: be at the Botanical Garden by 7:30 AM. The morning mist, the quiet, the quality of light — it is a completely different place from the 10 AM version.
Cover all five sections: Lower Garden (fossil tree, fern house), New Garden (roses, lily pond), Italian Garden (symmetrical European layout — the best photography in the garden), Conservatory, Nursery. The 20-million-year fossil tree is in the Lower Garden — do not miss it.
🌹 9:30 AM — Government Rose Garden
⏰ 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM | 💰 ₹30 Adults | ⏱ 45–60 minutes | 📍 2.5 km from Botanical Garden
20,000+ rose varieties on terraced hillside beds. Best in morning light. December–May is peak bloom season. The 45-minute visit covers all the terrace sections at a comfortable pace with photographs.
⛰️ 11:00 AM — Doddabetta Peak
⏰ 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM | 💰 ₹6 entry | ⏱ 1–1.5 hours | 📍 9 km from Rose Garden (25 min)
The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 metres. Drive to the parking area, walk 10–15 minutes to the summit. The Telescope House at the top allows views of distant peaks, valleys, and on clear days (October–February) the Mysore plains below.
Stop at the Tea Park viewpoint on the way down for fresh tea with the mountain as backdrop — one of the best ₹10 experiences in Ooty.
🍽️ 12:30 PM — Lunch at Charring Cross
Return to town. Charring Cross has the highest concentration of good restaurants. Hotel Junior Kuppanna for South Indian non-veg, Nahar's Sidewalk Café for wood-fired pizza and pure veg, A2B for South Indian breakfast items if you are eating lighter.
🍵 2:00 PM — Tea Factory or Museum Visit
⏰ 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM | 💰 ₹10–₹50 | ⏱ 45 minutes
The complete leaf-to-cup process: withering, rolling, oxidation, drying, and tasting. The Doddabetta Tea Factory (on the road you drove this morning) is the most convenient. Buy estate-fresh tea here — noticeably better than city-purchased versions of the same estate.
🚣 3:15 PM — Ooty Lake and Boat House
⏰ 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM | 💰 Pedal boats from ₹50 | ⏱ 1–1.5 hours | 📍 1.5 km from Charring Cross
Classic afternoon activity. Pedal boats for two, the mini-train loop for children, and the mandatory chilli bajji (mulaga bajji) from the lakeside stalls. The afternoon light on the water is good for photography.
🛍️ 5:00 PM — Charring Cross Evening Walk and Shopping
The Charring Cross area in the evening — hand-knit woolens, Toda embroidery shawls, Nilgiris honey, fresh spices, bakeries. This is also when the commercial street is most atmospheric. Finish Day 1 with a warm dinner — The Periodic Table or Earl's Secret for a special evening, or any of the casual restaurants on Commercial Road.
DAY 2 — Coonoor: Toy Train, Tea Estates & Viewpoints
Zone: Coonoor (19 km from Ooty) — a completely different hill station character Route logic: Toy train to Coonoor in morning, cab-based Coonoor sightseeing afternoon, return by road
🚆 8:45 AM — Ooty Railway Station (Toy Train Departure)
Train: 9:10 AM departure, Ooty (UAM) to Coonoor (ONR) Journey: 1 hour 45 minutes Class: First Class (₹425 per person) — strongly recommended Booking: IRCTC, 60–90 days advance for April–June; 1–2 weeks usually sufficient Oct–March
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage experience — a rack-and-pinion steam railway dating to 1899, climbing through 16 tunnels and across 31 bridges. The First Class compartment has window seats on both sides and holds only 4 passengers — the intimacy and the views are extraordinary. The journey is 19 km and takes 1 hour 45 minutes because of the steep gradient that requires the rack-and-pinion system.
Key moments on the journey: the first view of the valley as you leave Ooty, the Lovedale station with Wellington Defence Staff College visible, the Ketti Valley vista opening suddenly — one of the most dramatic valley views in South India — and the mist-and-forest section between Ketti and Coonoor.
Your driver: Have your cab driver meet you at Coonoor railway station (not Ooty) for the rest of the day.
🌺 11:00 AM — Sim's Park, Coonoor
⏰ 8:30 AM – 6:30 PM | 💰 ₹15–₹30 | ⏱ 45–60 minutes | 📍 1 km from Coonoor station
Coonoor's version of the Botanical Garden — but quieter, less visited, and in some ways more beautiful. 12 hectares spread across a natural hillside with over 300 tree species, fern gardens, herbaria, and a topiary section with sculpted hedges. The model boat races held here annually are a genuine local event. Less crowded than Ooty's Botanical Garden — a genuinely pleasant morning walk.
🍵 12:00 PM — Highfield or Glendale Tea Estate
A working tea estate visit with guided walk through the plucking rows, factory tour, and estate-fresh tasting. Coonoor's tea estates are among the Nilgiris' finest — the Glendale estate in particular is well-organised for visitors and produces an acclaimed orthodox tea. The estate restaurant serves lunch with views of the tea garden below.
Budget option: The Gene Pool Eco Park (now an organic nursery of the Forest Department) is a free nature trail near Coonoor — 8 km, 4 hours, scenic and educational.
🦅 2:00 PM — Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock
⏰ All day — viewpoints | 💰 Free | ⏱ 1.5 hours for both | 📍 10–12 km from Coonoor
Dolphin's Nose — A flat rock formation jutting over the Coonoor valley, hundreds of metres above the valley floor. Look down and you see Catherine Falls on the opposite hillside, the tea estates far below, and the Nilgiris folding away in every direction. The name comes from the shape of the rock platform. One of the most dramatic viewpoints in South India.
Lamb's Rock — 1 km from Dolphin's Nose. A sheer precipice with panoramic views of Coimbatore plains, lush tea plantations, and the Hulical Ravine. Named after Captain Lamb who discovered the path here. Combine both viewpoints in the same 90-minute excursion.
Practical note: The road to Dolphin's Nose is narrow. Your cab driver will be familiar with the route — leave navigation to them.
🌆 4:00 PM — Ketti Valley Viewpoint (on return to Ooty)
⏰ All day | 💰 Free | ⏱ 20–30 minutes | 📍 On the Ooty-Coonoor road, 4 km from Ooty
On the drive back from Coonoor to Ooty, stop at the Ketti Valley Viewpoint. The Ketti Valley is the largest valley in the Nilgiris — spread below you as you stand at the edge, the scale is remarkable. You may have already seen a portion of this from the toy train window this morning, but the viewpoint gives you the full panorama.
Return to Ooty by 5:00 PM — time for a quiet dinner after the Coonoor day.
DAY 3 — Wild West: Pykara + Mudumalai Safari
Zone: Western Nilgiris — the wild side Route logic: Leave Ooty early, Pykara → Wenlock Downs → optional Mudumalai safari, return by evening ⚠️ Critical note: Mudumalai safaris run at 7–9 AM and 3–5:30 PM. If you want to include Mudumalai, you must leave Ooty by 5:30 AM (for morning safari) or start Pykara early and time your Mudumalai arrival for the 3 PM safari. This is a long day — plan carefully.
🌲 9:00 AM — Pine Forest (6th Mile)
⏰ All day | 💰 Free | ⏱ 30–45 minutes | 📍 6 km on Gudalur Road
Tall pine trees planted in geometric rows — the landscape that has appeared in dozens of Indian films. At 9 AM with morning light filtering through the canopy, this is extraordinarily atmospheric. Horse rides are available (₹200–₹400 per circuit).
🌄 9:45 AM — Wenlock Downs (9th Mile)
⏰ All day | 💰 Free | ⏱ 45–60 minutes | 📍 9 km on Gudalur Road
Three km further along the same road, the forest opens suddenly into rolling montane grasslands — what botanists call shola-grassland mosaic. The landscape shifts from dense pine to open European-style meadows in a few hundred metres. Golden hour here (5–6 PM) is spectacular — but for Day 3, morning works well too.
💧 11:00 AM — Pykara Waterfalls
⏰ All day | 💰 ₹10 entry | ⏱ 30 minutes | 📍 21 km from Ooty (40 min drive from Wenlock Downs)
The Pykara River — considered sacred by the Toda tribe — drops 55m and 61m in two cascades. At their most dramatic in August–October monsoon; scenic year-round. Walk down the viewing path for the best angle.
🚤 11:45 AM — Pykara Lake and Boat House
⏰ 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM | 💰 Speed boat ₹200 per person | ⏱ 1 hour | 📍 1 km from Falls
Pykara Lake is the most scenic lake experience in the Nilgiris — wilder than Ooty Lake, surrounded by shola forest, genuinely quiet. The speed boat ride here is the most thrilling water activity available in the district. Lunch is available at small restaurants near the boat house.
🐘 2:00 PM onwards — Optional: Mudumalai National Park Safari
If you want to include Mudumalai (40–68 km from Ooty depending on route):
Option 1 — Afternoon safari: Leave Pykara by 1:00 PM, drive to Mudumalai via Gudalur (the smoother route — 68 km, 2 hours). Arrive at Theppakadu reception by 3:00 PM for the afternoon van safari (3:00–5:30 PM). Return to Ooty by 8 PM via the Kalhatty Ghat (shorter but more winding).
Option 2 — Swap Pykara for morning Mudumalai: Leave Ooty at 5:30 AM, reach Theppakadu by 7:00 AM for the morning safari (7–9 AM). After the safari, visit the Elephant Camp, drive back via Gudalur, stop at Pykara en route, return to Ooty by 5 PM. Skip Wenlock Downs on this option.
Safari prices: Van safari approximately ₹340 per person (Indian) | Jeep safari ₹1,120–₹1,500 per trip Booking: On-spot at Theppakadu reception — no advance online booking. Arrive 30 minutes before safari time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3 days enough for Ooty? Three days covers Ooty town, Coonoor, and one wild-country day (Pykara or Mudumalai) comfortably without rushing. It does not cover Kotagiri, Avalanche Lake as a separate dedicated day, Avalanche lake overnight camping, or extended wildlife exploration. For Kotagiri or Avalanche Lake, add a fourth day.
What is the best 3-day Ooty itinerary? Day 1: Ooty town (Botanical Garden, Rose Garden, Doddabetta, Tea Factory, Lake). Day 2: Coonoor by toy train (Sim's Park, tea estate, Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock). Day 3: Western Nilgiris (Pine Forest, Wenlock Downs, Pykara Lake, optional Mudumalai safari). This sequence has a logical geographic flow — no backtracking, no wasted driving.
Should I include Mudumalai in a 3-day Ooty trip? Yes, if wildlife is a priority for you. The honest constraint: Mudumalai is 40–68 km from Ooty and the morning safari starts at 7 AM, requiring you to leave Ooty by 5:30 AM. It is a long Day 3 but manageable. If you want a more relaxed third day, skip Mudumalai and spend more time at Pykara or Avalanche.
How do I book the toy train for the Coonoor day? On IRCTC (irctc.co.in). Search stations UAM (Ooty/Udhagamandalam) to ONR (Coonoor). Book First Class (₹425 per person) for window seats on both sides of the compartment. Departure from Ooty: 9:10 AM. For April–June, book 60–90 days in advance — tickets sell out within hours of opening. For other months, 1–2 weeks is usually sufficient.
What should I not miss in 3 days in Ooty? From OotyMade's local perspective: the Botanical Garden at 7:30 AM (before the crowds), the toy train to Coonoor (First Class, window seat), Dolphin's Nose viewpoint (one of the most dramatic viewpoints in South India), Pykara Lake speed boat (the most scenic activity in the district), and chilli bajji at Ooty Lake (the essential street food experience).
Can I do Ooty, Coonoor, and Mudumalai in 3 days? Yes — this is exactly what the Day 3 Mudumalai option in this guide achieves. It requires early starts (leave Ooty by 5:30 AM for morning safari on Day 3) but is genuinely doable. The alternative — afternoon safari on Day 3 — is slightly more relaxed but gives you less morning wildlife activity.
What is the best time to start the Ooty 3-day trip?
Start your Ooty trip on a Wednesday or Thursday to avoid weekend crowds at popular
spots. Arrive by evening and rest. Begin Day 1 by 7 AM — Doddabetta is best before
mist sets in at 9-10 AM. Book your toy train tickets on IRCTC at least a week in
advance.
