Tourist FAQs (2026 Updated)

Q: Can I apply for the E-Pass at the checkpost?

No. You must apply Online before reaching the checkpost. The internet signal at Burliyar/Kallar checkpost is often weak, so do it from home.

Q: Do two-wheelers (Bikes) need an E-Pass?

Yes. During peak seasons (April-June), bikes entering from other districts/states also require an E-Pass registration.

Q: I am coming by Bus/Train. Do I need a pass?

No. Passengers traveling by public transport (Govt Bus or Toy Train) usually do not need an individual E-Pass. It is mainly for private vehicles.

Q: My OTP is not coming. What to do?

The server gets busy. Try early in the morning or use a different mobile network. Do not wait until you are standing at the checkpost!

Q: Is there a limit on the number of passes?

Yes. The court has suggested a cap (e.g., 6000 vehicles/day). It is strictly "First Come, First Served". Apply as soon as your dates are fixed.

🛑 Common E-Pass Problems & Solutions

Q: How many days is the Ooty E-Pass valid for?

The E-Pass is valid only for the Date of Entry you selected. However, once you are inside the Nilgiris district, you can stay as long as you want. You do NOT need a new pass to exit.

Q: I booked a Zoomcar / Rental Car. Whose name should I enter?

Enter the Driver's Name (your name if you are driving) and the vehicle number provided by the rental agency. In the 'Rc Book' section, you can upload the rental agreement or the digital RC copy provided by the agency.

Q: My E-Pass shows "Pending" for a long time. Why?

The Ooty E-Pass is usually auto-approved instantly. If it says "Pending", it might be a server glitch. Solution: Do not wait. Apply again with a different mobile number. It usually works the second time.

Q: Can I change the date or vehicle number after approval?

No. You cannot edit an issued E-Pass. If your travel plan changes or you change your car, you must apply for a fresh E-Pass. Since it is free, there is no loss.

Q: I am visiting both Ooty and Kodaikanal. Do I need two passes?

Yes. Ooty (Nilgiris) and Kodaikanal (Dindigul) are in different districts. You need to apply for the Ooty E-Pass for Nilgiris and a separate Kodaikanal E-Pass (if applicable during that season) on the same portal.

Q: Which Checkpost should I select?

If coming from Coimbatore/Mettupalayam, select "Burliyar" or "Kallar".
If coming from Mysore/Bangalore, select "Kakkanallah".
If coming from Kerala (Gudalur side), select "Nadugani".

Q: Do I need a printout, or is a soft copy enough?

A soft copy (screenshot on phone) is perfectly fine. However, ensure your phone has battery charge! The police at the checkpost will scan the QR code from your mobile screen.
