Mukurthi National Park: Entry Permit, Trekking Permission & How to Apply (2026)

Mukurthi National Park is the wildest corner of the Nilgiris — around 40 km from Ooty, a
UNESCO-recognized part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and home of the endangered
Nilgiri Tahr, our state animal. Unlike Doddabetta or the Botanical Garden, you cannot
simply buy a ticket and walk in. Entry is by Forest Department permit only, through
guided treks. Here is how it actually works.
The Golden Rule: Permit First, Always
Entry to Mukurthi is only through the Tamil Nadu Forest Department (Nilgiris
Division) — there is no open tourist entry
Independent trekking, camping, or driving inside the park is not permitted
Access points are via the Avalanche and Parsons Valley check-posts
Trek entry is generally allowed between 8 AM and 2 PM, guided groups only
How to Get Your Permit / Trek Booking
1. Trek Tamil Nadu (Forest Department’s official trekking programme): The
department runs organized treks inside Mukurthi — including the famous Parsons
Valley Trekking Shed to Mukurthi Hut route (~22 km through shola grasslands).
Book through the official Trek Tamil Nadu portal or the Nilgiris Forest Division.
2. District Forest Office (DFO), Ooty: For permits, forest rest house bookings
(Avalanche/Upper Bhavani side), and any special permissions, the DFO office in Ooty
(near town) is your contact point.
3. Book well in advance — group sizes are small, slots are limited, and weekends fill
fast.
 Popular Permitted Trek Routes
Mukurthi Peak Trail — the classic, with sweeping views of grasslands and shola
forests
Parsons Valley → Mukurthi Hut — a full-day ~22 km trek through some of the most
untouched landscape in South India
Upper Bhavani side — reservoir views and Tahr habitat (permit required, remote)
What Makes Mukurthi Special
Rolling montane grasslands, stunted shola forests, misty ridgelines and the Nilgiri Tahr —
this landscape looks more like the Scottish highlands than typical South India. You may also
spot sambar, barking deer, Nilgiri langur and, rarely, signs of tiger and leopard. This is a
conservation-first park: small groups, no facilities, carry-in carry-out.
