Avalanche Ooty: Forest Entry, Safari Booking, Fee & Timings — Complete Guide (2026)
Avalanche (locals say “Avalanchee”) is one of the most beautiful protected areas in the
Nilgiris — a shola-forest valley with a pristine lake about 23–28 km from Ooty town,
inside the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Because it is protected forest land, you cannot simply
drive in. Here is exactly how entry works, from people who have lived here for decades.
How Entry Works (Step by Step)
1. Drive from Ooty via Muthorai and Ithalar towards Emerald/Avalanche (45–75
minutes, scenic tea-estate road).
2. Stop at the Forest Department check-post. Pay the entry fee here — visitor details
and vehicle numbers are recorded.
3. Park at the designated parking area. Private vehicles are NOT allowed beyond this
point.
4. Book your safari at the forest counter — Forest Department jeeps and mini-buses
take you inside the reserve.
Entry Fee & Safari Charges (Indicative, 2026)
Forest entry: around ₹40 per adult
Vehicle entry (up to parking): around ₹50 per car
Shared jeep/bus safari: around ₹250 per person
Full jeep (up to 8 people): around ₹2,000
Safari duration: roughly 1–2 hours, covering lake viewpoints, forest stretches, and
scenic points on the Upper Bhavani side
⚠ There is NO online booking for Avalanche. Tickets are sold only at the forest counter
on the spot, first-come-first-served. Only a limited number of jeeps/buses operate at a time,
so waiting times of 1–2 hours are common in season.
⏰ Timings
Entry roughly 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (last safari departs by early afternoon)
Reach the check-post by 9 AM — this is the single best tip we can give. Late
arrivals in peak season often face long waits or miss the last safari.
The Forest Department can close entry without notice due to weather, wildlife
movement, or maintenance.
Best Time to Visit
October to March for clear skies and cool weather; April–June is pleasant but crowded.
During heavy monsoon (July–August), access is often restricted — check before travelling.
Other Things at Avalanche
Trout hatchery: fishing permits and rod rentals are available on-site for a nominal
fee
Emerald Lake (5 km away): viewable from the road with no permit needed — a
beautiful free stop on the same route
Trekking: only on authorized routes with forest permission; independent trekking
inside protected zones is not allowed (see our Mukurthi guide for organized treks)
Local Tips from OotyMade
Carry cash — the forest counter may not accept UPI reliably in this remote area
Carry warm clothing even in summer; the valley is colder than Ooty town
Watch your food near the counter — monkeys are active there
The approach road is narrow and bumpy in stretches — drive slow, enjoy the tea
estates
Combine Avalanche with Emerald Lake for a full half-day; don’t try to squeeze in
Coonoor the same day
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior permission to visit Avalanche? You don’t need advance paperwork for
the regular tourist safari — pay the fee and book at the forest check-post on the day.
Special activities (camping, research, photography shoots) need prior permission from the
Forest Office in Ooty.
Can I take my own car to Avalanche Lake? No. Private vehicles are allowed only up to
the check-post/parking. Beyond that, only Forest Department jeeps and buses operate.
Can I book the Avalanche safari online? No. There is no online booking. Tickets are
available only at the forest counter, so arrive by 9 AM.
Is Emerald Lake also restricted? No. Emerald Lake can be seen from the public road
without any permit — only the Avalanche core zone is restricted.
How much time does the Avalanche trip take from Ooty? Plan at least half a day: 1
hour each way by road, possible waiting time at the counter, and 1–2 hours of safari.
