⚠️ Important Driving Warning

There are two ways to reach Mudumalai from Ooty:

  • Route 1 (Kalhatty Ghat): 36 km. Very steep with 36 hairpin bends. Private vehicles are often stopped by police. Not for new drivers.
  • Route 2 (Via Gudalur): 67 km. Longer but much safer and wider. Recommended for families.

🚌 Govt Bus/Van Safari

The only safari allowed inside the Core Tiger Zone.

  • Timings: 7-10 AM & 3-6 PM.
  • Duration: 45 Mins to 1 Hour.
  • Cost: Approx ₹340 per person.
  • Booking: Spot booking at Theppakadu Reception.
🚙 Private Jeep Safari

Operated by locals in the Masinagudi Buffer Zone (outside core area).

  • Timings: Flexible (6 AM to 8 PM).
  • Cost: ₹1500 - ₹2000 per jeep.
  • Best For: Night drives, spotting Elephants on the road.
🐘 Elephant Safari

Ride on a tamed elephant into the tall grass.

  • Timings: 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM & 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
  • Availability: Limited seats. First come, first serve.
  • Experience: Unique, silent, close to nature.

Q: Can we book the Mudumalai Safari online?

As of 2025, online booking is limited. The most reliable way for the Van Safari is to reach the Theppakadu Reception Centre 30 minutes before the counter opens (6:30 AM or 2:30 PM).

Q: What is the difference between Mudumalai and Bandipur?

They are legally the same forest, separated by a state border. Mudumalai is in Tamil Nadu, and Bandipur is in Karnataka. You cross the border bridge near Theppakadu.

Q: Is it safe to drive at night?

No. The forest check posts usually close from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM to protect wildlife. Plan your travel during daylight hours only.
